Eagle River Fencing Club
If you were to ask most fencers when they were born, most would admit
they were born 500 years to late. This would be true for members of the
Eagle River Fencing Club. The club was started in 1991 and met at the
“Rug Bones” store on the Old Glenn Highway. Meeting and lessons
were held in the back warehouse. Although a little cramped, most
members and students of the ancient art of Fencing where happy to
have a place to practice their swordplay. After the closure of the Rug
Bones store, the club was fortunate to move to a large space above the
Garcia’s Restaurant off business loop road.
Club membership peaked at about 20 in 1993-1994. The move and
membership drive was in large part to the efforts of former club
president, Margie Faraday. The space was perfect for fencing. Three
fencing pistes, made of sheet metal and measuring approximately 46
feet long and five feet wide where laid down. A large area to the side
was designated as a rapier and re-enactment room. There was plenty of
space for socializing as well. The club remained there for a few years
until the space was renovated
and rented out to the City of Anchorage for administrative offices.
The club moved to one of the lower banquet halls in the Soupy’s
Restaurant at 12300 Old Glenn Highway behind Alaska Industrial
Hardware in the spring of 2003. Club membership dropped off to about
five at this time. They remained at this location for just under two years.
The club bounced to a couple of different and much smaller locations
for the next few years. The entity had been mostly silent during this time
with membership dropping off to just a few fencers. This was mostly due
to the fact the club had lost a viable location.
In 2005, again to the hard work of Margie Faraday, the club was able to
move back to the location at 11901 Business Loop Road, above Garcia’
s Restaurant. The space was about half the size of the original but still
enough room for three strips and a meeting area. Membership was up
to about thirty members.
